Businesses can learn from Facebook’s experience

learningAfter several days of intense media scrutiny, Facebook has backed down on controversial changes to its Terms of Service (TOS).   Both CTV Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Free Press asked me to comment on this timely story, which provides a lesson for other businesses that operate websites to be mindful that TOS (and privacy policies) must be able to withstand legal scrutiny but also user expectations.

    Hi Brian:

Nice job in the interviews. I agree, this is probably the first time many people even looked at the terms of service, and were shocked at what they found. I found that even savvy social networking site users were not aware of the terms of service or how they had really changed.

It will be interesting to see what Facebook comes back with, and if it has an affect on other sites.

    Cheers,
    Connie Crosby
